View of living room (left) looking from the window seat toward the front door.
The vacuum cabinet (upper right), holds canvas bags, plastic bags, keys, and other misc.
items as well as the vacuum. On top of it is a box of Bob's unread
magazines: yet another attempt to organize the paper that inevitably ends up all
over the table. Our kitchen has cork flooring (lower right), which is a
renewable resource that is also very comfortable to stand on.
Because our main floor is compact, we put storage where we had
space for us, utilizing space that often goes wasted. In this view, the
stair landing has a shoe cabinet and a coat rack in place of a
closet. We also store stuff under our window seat, under the bookcase, and
in a vacuum cupboard in the kitchen.
The flooring in the main living area is Madrone, a local wood
that is rarely used. It and all of our floor were finished with a low-voc water based
polyurethane. Most of our door and window casings are salvaged fir. The shoe cabinet was made from
cut off scrap from those casings.
The stair rail and newel post are one unit that can be removed in order to move furniture up the
stairs.
