Basement Utility closet

pex hydronic wall unit
Our utilities are probably the thing that is most unconventional.  Our plumbing is PEX, which is actually likely to become the standard due to its lower cost.  Our system is the "homerun" configuration so that each fixture has its own line, which reduces that amount of wasted hot water left in the line. The heating system is a hydronic fan-coil, which is like forced hot air, but the air is much cooler, eliminating burning the dust in the air, which can create toxic byproducts.  In reality, we wish we found a way to do in floor radiant at a reasonable cost.
solar pre-heat
The solar pre-heat tank. The higher insulated lines go to the collector, the lower to the HW tank. The pump is off to the right (not visible). The lines are copper because the water is sometimes over 160°F.
The controller is the box with the LCD display.

The purple PEX is the feed line to the toilets from the rainwater pump.
